How it works
We use a range of neuromuscular, remedial soft tissue and sensory integrative techniques to remove stressful triggers and optimise how the body’s sensory and motor systems work together. Controlled by the Central Nervous System (CNS), these systems can be disrupted by injury (current and historic), trauma (mental and physical), illness or stress. Even after the initial issue is resolved or healed, the nervous system may still perceive a threat, leading to pain, restricted movement, reduced strength, and lower stress tolerance over time. This is known as neuroplastic pain or dysfunction, and research has shown this is a common mechanism behind chronic pain.
What to expect in a session
Assessment: To assess posture and identify areas of restricted movement. The first session also includes a consultation to understand your personal context for a more personalised treatment plan. Your injury, illness and stress history can inform where the cause of your current issue may lie.
Hands on treatment: Using a range of neuromuscular and remedial massage therapeutic techniques to restore function and reduce pain. A mixture of couch based, seated and standing techniques will be used depending on the what the priority issue is, as well as current ability based on pain and movement restrictions.
Retesting & movement integration: We will test, treat and retest issues to ensure the CNS no longer perceives a threat; reinforcing improvements to ensure integration and lasting results.
Why this approach?
Traditional treatments often focus on symptoms, which are downstream of the actual issue. Lasting change comes from addressing the cause, which we can pinpoint and address via the nervous system - the body’s control centre. Pain, tension, and movement restrictions are often signs of a deeper issue; the nervous system perceiving a threat, even after an injury has healed or the live threat has passed. The CNS will work to protect you by restricting your movement to avoid the perceived threat of damage. The neuromuscular approach helps reset the body’s perception and therefore its response, leading to faster recovery, improved movement, and long-term results.
